TEN SUGGESTIONS TO FOLLOW TO SECURE
THE BEST RESULTS FROM WOODWORK

1. Do not store in damp warehouse or freshly plastered buildings. Wood

has the tendency to hold moisture content relative to the humidity of the atmos-
phere surrounding it.

2. Paint or varnish seals wood — the re Fore, paint or varnish after installing.

By seahns the wood, the woodwork is made less sensitive to atmospheric changes.
Woodwork swells as the moisture content increases, and shrinks as it decreases.

3. Paint or varnish exposed end woods of doors, or in other words, the tops

and bottoms aFter they have been fitted. The end wood, that is, the top and
bottom edges oF doors, is much more susceptible to atmospheric changes and,
thereFore, is the most important part oF all woodwork to paint. IF left unpainted,
as it oFten is, due to these edges not showing, warping is caused by the swelling
of the wood on the outside of the door, due to the damp atmospheric conditions
and shrinking on the inside, due to dry atmosphere usually prevalent in most
houses during the heating season. This action is analogous to that of a slice of
bread being toasted one side at a time — it curls toward the heat.

4. If door is Fitted for weatherstripping, make sure paint is applied under
weatherstripping. The reasons for this statement are the same as under sugges-
tions 2 and 3.

5. In painting doors, windows and frames, be sure no paint touches the
weatherstrip. Paint on weatherstrip will not permit efficiency.

6. Where interior doors are to be painted we do not recommend flat veneered
panelled Fir doors. Flat Fir panels are made up from rotary cut veneer, which is
peeled from the log on a giant lathe and then made flat. Unnatural stresses and
Strains are set up in the fibres of the wood which in turn are liable to cause hair
checks to appear in the panel. These hair checks ere not noticeable when a door
is stained/ but do detract from its appearance when painted.

7. An 1'^4" door is stronger than one of 1^^' thickness and is worth the
increased cost. A door is the only piece of woodwork outside of a casement

sdsh which swings in space supported only on one edge. All other woodwork
is securely held in place or slides in a groove like a double hung window. There-
fore/ a door needs strength at the point where the lock is mortised in and the
thickness of the wood on each side of the mortise is Jie" greater on the 1M" door,
which strengthens the weakest point of a door. It also stands to reason that the
thicker the door the greater the rigidity.

8. Use three butts in hanging doors. The third butt is another aid to holding
the butt edge of the door in alignment.

9. When placing blocks back oi door jambs, see that they are placed back
of where butts are to be placed in hanging door. This will give proper holding
power for screws.

1 0. Buy Andersen Units and Morgan Woodwork.

Measurements oF stiles and bottom rails of doors, where given in this Catalog,
are overall. This means that where the door has a flush moulding, the width of
stile and bottom rail would not include the moulding as it is a separate piece.
hHowever, when the door has a solid sticking, such as ogee, ovolo, bead and cove,
the measurement includes this moulding.

ADVANTAGES OF
MORGAN AND ANDERSEN PRODUCTS

All parts of Andersen Master Frames and Units are treated
with a chemical preservative as a protection against decay in
accordance with highest industry standards.

Morgan Colonial Entrance Doors and Colonial Entrance
frames are also given a toxic and water repellent treatment.
This treatment does not take the place of paint or varnish but it
does help to minimize the increasing and decreasing of moisture
content from the time of manufacture until it is fitted on the job.
Immediately after fitting^ however, carry out suggestions 2 and 3
(Page IV). This is important.

Morgan Colonial Entrance doors have 5K" stiles instead of
4%" — which gives added strength so that when the lock is
mortised in there will be M" more of stile that has not been
cut out.

To meet the architectural requirements of the correctly de-
signed house each item has been selected for its adaptability to
present day home planning.

The entrance doorS/ windows, shutters, stairways, mantels and
other woodwork must be true-to-type to give lasting beauty and
value.

For your protection and satisfaction, demand Morgan wood-
work and Andersen Units.

WINDOWS AND SASH
BOSTON LAYOUT

Our Windows are made from clear Pine thoroughly seasoned^
glazed with Pure Linseed Oil Putty, glass bedded.

Before Glazing, the sash are treated with a Chemical Preservative
which acts as a moisture repellent and protects the sash against decay.

Well made windows are of vital importance to the builder. Win-
dows that fit poorly, glass rattling in the frame, putty falling off,
windows that look cheap and are cheap, will at once put the stamp
of disapproval upon a building no matter how well constructed
other portions of the structure may be.

A good, well built window remains always that which it was in
the beginning, while a cheap, poorly made window is apt to prove
a source of annoyance and expense.

The term "Window" as used in this catalog means two sash, top
and bottom. The term "Sash" means one piece to Fill an opening.

In ordering, state first the WIDTFH of glass, second the hIEIGHT
of glass, number of lights in windows, thickness, and if windows are
odd sizes (not listed), give outside dimensions and sketch.

Boston sizes of windows measure 3^ inches of wood IN
WIDTH over glass and 5 incheb of wood IN HEIGHT over glass.

All Boston sizes of windows have 3^-inch lip.

All window and sash orders will be filled Glazed unless spe-
cifically ordered Unglazed.

UNGLAZED SASH AND BLINDS

We carry in stock Unglazed Sash as per Boston Sizes shown on
Glazed Window pages.

We carry in stock Blinds to cover practically all Boston size win-
dows as per sizes shown.

BLINDS, and SHUTTERS are given a Toxic and Water Repellent
Treatment to protect against decay.

SECTIONAL DETAILS

MODULAR SIZES

Sizes have been changed to conform to the
modular standards for masonry openings and
glass lights are cut accordingly in order to
maintain the A" module. Masonry openings
shown on the table of sizes are exact overall
unit dimensions. Widths are measured from back
of brick mouldings and heights from top of brick
moulding to bottom edge of sill. The masonry
opening height dimensions ^xz less than the
modular opening to allow for the lintel and the
slope of the masonry sifL

MULTIPLE OPENINGS

To arrive at masonry opening widths for
multiple openings using 4" modular mullions,
multiply number of openings by corresponding
masonry opening width shown for single unit.
To figure rough stud opening widths using 4"
modular mullion^ multiply number of openings by
corresponding sash opening width for singles
and add 4%" plus 4" for each mullion center
required.

PRESSURE SEAL WINDOW

A BRAND NEW IDEA
IN DOUBLE HUNG WINDOW UNITS

The Andersen Pressure Seal Double Hung Window Unit is new^the newest
idea in window manufdcturing.

But the basic principle of operation- — the invisible pressure strips that make
the window weathertight, that permit floating sash action^ and that make possible
the easy removal of both sash — the wedge-line action principle is seven years old.

Andersen has tested this wedge-like action in thousands of installations — given
it the most exhaustive laboratory tests engineers can devise. Through all this
testing the Andersen Pressure Seal Double FHung Window Unit has performed
with amazing effectiveness.

Andersen checked every detail — every function — every standard of perform-
ance — refining and improving through war and post-war years until it was certain
the new window would take its rightful place in the Andersen Windowall
family.

1. Section of lower sash showing
thumb lever down. Wedge
action is released and pressure
strip is retracted into sash stile.
This completely frees sash from
all contact with sash run and
permits free floating action
operation. Also allows easy
sash removal.

Section of lower sash showing
thumb lever up. The pressure
strip pushes against inside stop
and wedges sash firmly against
parting stop, which seals verti-
cal crack when sash ^xz closed
and holds sash firmly in any
open position.

PRESSURE SEAL WINDOW

You've never seen a double hung window so easy to operate!

Sash float Freely in sash runs. No friction
dsainst weatherstrips or painted surfaces.
Metal covered parting stop insures smooth
and easy sash operation.

No more rattling! Sash are held firmly in
any open or closed position by wedge-like
action.

19

Cleaning's easy, Because the
Sash Are Removable

Just lift out the sash. No tools needed
- — and it takes only seconds. Sash are not
hung on weights or attached to springs or
balances. With sash out, screens and storm
sash can be changed from the inside.

QUICK AND EASY INSTALLATION
REDUCES FINAL COST

Installation is remarkably simple
— saving builders many valuable
hours on a single house. Besides,
sash can be painted outside the
frame, allowed to dry, then slipped
into place. This saves time — and
trouble with paint bind.

Moulded inside stop on side
jamb simplifies trimming out. A
special fitted stool is included.
Only simple inside casing required.

REZO DOORS

For Exterior Doors, see pages 49 and 50
For Interior Doors, see page 63

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES OF REZO DOORS

A. Wide top and bottom rails are of sufficient width to permit cutting
down 2" in height — cut equally from top and bottom.

B. Vent openings or exits for ventilation and as an equalizer for
temperature and humidity. Each cell is thus ventilated. No hollow
door will prove satisfactory that has the air pocketed in the door.

C. Core mesh standards are 2" x 2'^ 2" x 4" and 4" and 4", according
to Paine manufacturing standards.

D. Edge strips can be faced with hardwood to match faces. Standard
door edges are pine.

E. Lock area both sides. 4^" x 20'' insures ample lock space no
matter how door is hung.

F. Woven-wood core overlaid with plywood two sides.

FACTS ABOUT REZO DOORS

^ ORIGINAL Flush type hollow core door — a product of French wood craftsmen and

■ research engineers— made in U. S. A. "REZO" trademark registered.

O PROVED by years of use in varying European climates and on transatlantic liners. Over

^ four million Paine Rezo doors in use in America.

3 ARCHITECTURAL trend calls for flush surfaces. Rezo doors fulfill these requirements
perfectly.

4 STRONGER and LIGFHTER in weight than old type flush doors— will not sag nor shrink.

C AIR CONDITIONED — continuous air circulation throughout full length and width of

** door^ minimizes possibility of warping.

6 MORE SANITARY because of flush surfaces.

7 ADDED INSULATION against heat, cold and noise because of air cell construction,

Q PRE-FITTED and Sanded ready for painter*s finish — precision made and square to exact

** opening size — assures lower installation costs.

lifting power through a smooth arc.

(4) Patented "Automatic Brake" stops
door at full open position . . . prevents

POINTS OF SUPERIORITY IN MORGAN CABINETS

Planned by noted architectural and domestic science authorities. The men engaged to design
Morgan Period Woodwork also designed Morgan Kitchen Cabinets.

Scientifically conceived to render greatest eFficiency in kitchen layout — time-saving — toil-
saving!

Fit any space — meet any requirement. Hundreds of practical assemblies may easily and quickly
be produced with Morgan Kitchen Cabinet units.

Strictly modern in design — exposed surfaces are all flat, dust-proof, sanitary, easy to keep
clean. Morgan Cabinets harmonize with all of the latest modern designs in ranges, refrigerators
and other kitchen utilities.

DOORS

Doors are 5-ply with Basswood veneer, a smooth satiny appearance providing a perfect
painting surface, and drawers have lip fronts providing added security against dust and vermin.

Morgan doors are very light and easy on hinges. They will not sag. The beveled rabbet
will prevent binding.

Morgan cross banding on doors makes smooth exposed edges.

DRAWERS ^ _,

Morgan drawers have M" sliding frame under the drawer with guides on each side to be
nailed into the sides of the body so that they will have easy action at all times.

HARDWARE ^ ^ ^ •

Special, improved tarnish-proof Chromium hardware furnished for exterior, and Cadmium

plated parts for interior of cabinets.
Morgan drawer pull is neat and attractive. Screws will not loosen as they are fastened

through the drawer from the back. Morgan door knobs are sturdier, more attractive, and more

solid as attached to the door from the back.

MORGAN SEQIONAL KITCHEN CABINETS
POINTS OF SUPERIORITY IN MORGAN CABINETS

BODY OF CABINET

Made of No. 1 Pine ready for painting. Substantially
constructed. The face rim in Morgan Kitchen Cabinet base
units is 1 K" on sides and bottom with a 2" top rail. Face
rim of upper units 1 H" all around. Morgan front frame is
mortisecTand tenoned and glued together, whereas the frame
in many cabinets is nailed only. Top and bottom and pieces
of the body of some cabinets are made of Plywood, while the
ends of Morgan Cabinets are made of solid Pine. Morgan
front frame is grooved so that the end pieces that are tongued
fit together perfectly.

In many cabinets H" panels are used for the bottom shelf,
whereas Morgan shelves are of solid Pine.

Working heights are full 36" inc. counter — the most con-
venient height for the average housewife. Eliminates tire-
some stooping.

Space arrangements in all Morgan Cabinets were worked
out by domestic science authorities and consequently assure
minimum waste of motion and time. Utensils are always
where they should be — always within easy reach and never
in the way.

Morgan Kitchen Cabinets are made so regular stock sinks and drainboards of
porcelain, tile, Moncl Metal, Stainless Steel, Bakelite, Formica or plain wood
fit perfectly. Note: Your dealer can furnish any type of sink or counter top
desired.

Furnished unpainted to enable the painter to finish cabinets to harmonize with
the color scheme of the kitchen. Already painted cabinets often clash with
other colors in the kitchen. Continuous toe space at base of cabinets is provided
for working comfort and to keep front of base free from mop stains. (No legs
to catch dust.) Metal bread and cake drawers and flour container of special
heavy sheet tin. Metal flour bins are of AAA charcoal tin.

Morgan Kitchen Cabinets can be easily and quickly put together. All pieces
are clearly marked so that *'A" fits into "A", *'B" into "B", etc. Furthermore,
each carton contains full direction sheets.

MORGAN COLONIAL STAIRWAYS

THE STEIGEL STAIRWAY

Some of the best of the old original Colonial stairways were very
plain — free from ornate detail and it is these plainer types that are
most suited to present-day home building. An example of this
simplicity of detail is shown here. This interesting design comes from
an old Dutch Colonial house in Lancaster County^ Pennsylvania.
